Similar to boat slings, the condition of the wire rope on your travel lift plays a critical role in the overall performance and safety of your lift.
Wire Rope Maintenance
Replacing the wire rope on a travel lift is unavoidable. However, there are steps you can take to extend the life of your wire rope.
Wire rope lubricants reduce friction as the wires move up and down, and provide corrosion protection. While wire rope is lubricated during the manufacturing process, this will only last a limited amount of time. It is crucial to adhere to a wire rope lubrication routine to reduce the long-term cost of maintenance on you travel lift.
Replacing Your Wire Rope
The wire rope on your travel lift should be replaced at least once a year, or when you see excessive corrosion. Failure to properly maintain or replace your wire rope may result in serious damage to your lift or dock, damage to a boat, or worse. Here are a few signs it may be time to replace the wire rope on your travel lift:
- Wire rope frayed, flat, tangled or twisted? Time to get it fixed.
- Excessive corrosion of your wire rope? This is an early warning sign that they are overdue for replacement.
- Wire rope has not been properly lubricated.
If the wire rope on your travel lift appears to be on its last legs, it is better to replace it, than to risk potentially overextending the life of your wire rope.
